Attack The Block

2011 was a year of Alien invasion movies. We had Paul, Battle LA, Super 8, Cowboys and Aliens and others. But to see what comes off as the crown victor in that category this year one must travel overseas to merry old england where Joe Cornish's directorial debut is set. Attack The Block follows a group of South London inner city teenage gangster wannabes encounter with a hostile alien race. The film is fast, funny and has some great scares. While many films spend a third of the film setting up plot and characters, ATB jumps almost right into the action. With a running time of just a little over 80 minutes ATB has very little slow time most of the films is high action awesomeness. The aliens themselves are a whole knew take on the genre. the usual bipedal green slimy things are replaced with what can be best described by the name given to them by the main characters "Crazy Alien Gorilla Wolf Motherfuckers." The shapeless black harry things only defined by glowing luminescent blue teeth. The young cast is quite well done and very authentically cast. One can hardly like the teenage posse at the start of the film, but as it progresses we began to like them more and more as we cheer them on in defending their run down apartment complex from the CAGWMF's.Newcomer John Boyega leads the gang as Moses a 15 year old boy with a cold exterior and a thick south london accent (the entire cast has thick accents which may be heard to understand more some). Some of the best comic relief comes from the gangs drug dealer Ron portrayed by the always funny Nick Frost as he calmly watching animal planet and smokes pot through the entire invasion. ATB is a must watch for any sci-fi fan or lovers of the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy. Believe it bruv this film is awesome!

Troll 2

PG-13
Walker's Rating 4/5
Skip It/ See It
For every good film there is an equally bad film. But once in a generation come a movie so bad that it is fantastic. Troll 2 is one of those movies. The film was directed by Claudio Fragasso who did not speak english (or spoke very little) during the time of the film. The story concerns a family who goes in vacation to a small town called Nilbog. The youngest family member Joshua realizes the town itself is inhabited by Goblins who can poes as humans. That's right, Troll 2 has not a single troll in it, it's all goblins. Everything about this movie is terrible. The acting is dreadful. The dialoge is like someone who never spoke english tried to write a script based on how they thought American teenagers talked..Oh wait that's exactly what happened. The Trolls..I mean Goblins look like a fake plastic mask put on a potato sack with arms and legs. Let none of Troll 2's terribleness defer you from watching it. In fact it should make you want to watch it more. Possibly the best scene is where the queen of the goblins seduces a teenager with a piece of corn. The entire film has a anti vegetarian agenda, as the goblins themselves are vegetarians and before eating people must first turn them into plant matter. After watching Troll 2 it is highly advised to view Best Worst Movie to see the back story of the films and see the cast years later and their reactions to the film. So sit back with a big glass of Nilbog milk, some suspiciously green colored food and prepare yourself for the best worst 90 minutes of your life.

Hugo

Hugo
PG
Walker's Rating 4.5/5
Skip it/See It
It is rare to see a 3D film in which after viewing, you leave the theatre with a massive headache and the thought that you could have saved $5 by seeing it in 2D and it would have made little to no difference (I'm looking at you Michael Bay). For Martin Scorsese's  new film Hugo that is not the case. If you are to see one film in 3D this year, make it Hugo. From the opening shot we are immersed into the amazing world of the film. The cinematography is  wonderfully done with several panning and tracking shots taking us through the busy Paris railway station. Our titular character is a young orphaned boy portrayed by the blue eyed Asa Butterfield, who lives in the walls of a Paris railway station in 1931. The opening scene beautifully plays out his daily routine of keeping all the clocks in the station working while avoiding Station inspector Gustav played by Borat...I mean Sacha Baron Cohen. Hugo's life changes when he meets the goddaughter (Chloe Grace Moretz) of a toy shop owner at the station who has a key that will unlock a secret to the top shop owners past and take them on an incredible journey. People of all ages will enjoy this masterpiece as they are drawn in by the story, characters and world.

Insidious

Insidious
PG-13
Walker's Rating 3.5/5
Skip it/See it

Many of todays horror films mainly get their scares through cheep "pop up scares" and excessive blood and gore. Insidious gives a fresh face to the more modern horror genre with little if no blood and a very tense scary feeling. This seems to be a new thing for director James Wan of the Saw and Paranormal Activity fame. The story revolves around a family whose life's start to change after they move into a new house. At first this seems like your basic haunted house film. The story however takes a turn when the the son of Josh and Renai Wilson (Played by Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne respectively) goes into what appears to be a coma. The sons coma coincides with a increase in paranormal events including doors opening and closing by themselves, "ghost children" running through the Wilson's home and appearances of a darth maul like demon. The overall eeriness of the film is greatly helped by the score composed by Joseph Bishara which is full of calm and erie high pitch almost psycho like violin score. The film even uses Tim Tim's Tiptoe Through The Tulip's well enough to ensure that no one will ever feel safe when the song is played. Another strong point for this film was the cinematography which can be best described as said by a friend of mine. "Like a british film." With many Vertigo like shots and tracking shots in which small things that can be very easily missed but are quite creepy appear for a brief second. The film as a whole falls apart in it's final 20 minutes. As we enter a dark place known only as "The Further" things go from creepy to almost silly as many of  the things that made the film scary in the first place. Luckily the films pulls it together for a good final 10 seconds. When watching the movie keep an eye for for a picture of Jigsaw the creepy clown guy from the saw films.
